I'm not very serious often; however, today would have been my sister's 26th birthday, but she passed away 5 1/2 years ago. She was diagnosed with oral mouth cancer which she retracted from her braces. My sister and I got braces alittle later in our teen years. We had a few complications because the braces were always rubbing against our gums. My sister's brace was broken: a piece of metal, in the back of her mouth was jabbing into her tounge. When she told the orthodontist he basically brushed her off and told her to man up. We then later found out by our doctor we needed to see a specialist and get the tounge examined. By then the tumor had formed. The type of cancer she was diagnosed with is very rare. It develops from an infection, hers being an irratation from her braces.
The reason I write this is not for pity, but to spread knowledge.
All dentists and orthodontists are supposed to give oral cancer mouth exams every visit. So make sure you're getting yours. Also make sure in the furture or even now, that your kids are being checked on their daily visits as well. You're paying for these visits and it's your right to ask.
I hope this has informed you well and you pass this along to your loved ones and friends.
Lots of Love,
xox
